Kal Bhairav Ujjain - Where Liqueur is Offered to God

The famous Kal Bhairav Hindu temple located in the Mahakaleshwar’s  City Ujjain Madhya Pradesh, India.

The interesting thing about this temple is that the God is offered liquor unlike other temples to invoke divine blessings. Small and big liquor bottles and other puja items are available outside the temple and devotees buy it and offer to god.

Kal Bhairav Nath is the guardian deity of the city of Ujjain. The temple is very ancient and believed to have built by King Badrasenan.  Kal Bhairava is the chief among the eight Bhairavs of the Saivaite tradition and is the most fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva among Ashta Bhairavas and is worshiped by tantric cult.



Kal Bhairav Temple said to have been built by King Bhadrasen on the banks of Shipra River. This ancient temple is dedicated to Kal Bhairav, the chief among the eight Bhairavs. The worship of Kal Bhairav is a part of Shaivite tradition, mainly by the Kapalika and Aghora sects.

The vehicle of Kal Bhairav is a dog, and the life-like statue of the one outside the sanctum is accompanied by many of its companions of flesh and blood.


People go to the Kal Bhairav temple in order to worship Kal Bhairav, Kal Bhairav is also known as Khetrapala and he is regarded as the guardian of the temple that is why the keys of the Kal Bhairav temple is to be kept at the temple premise at night and no one should carry it elsewhere. Since Kal Bhairav is also the protector of the travelers, one should make a garland of Cashew nuts and give it to the God along with lighting a lamp so that he is pleased and save the traveler from any danger.

Mehandipur Balaji temple is located in Dausa district of Rajasthan, 255 km away from Delhi.  There are three main deities of the temple- Lord Hanuman, Pret Raj (The King of spirits), Bhairav.

Thousands of devotees flock this temple every day not just to be penitent, but to get their loved ones relived of evil spirits and ghosts. Some even say that this holy place is bestowed with such power that it could turn atheistic to a theist.

Balaji temple at Mehandipur in Rajasthan is one such place. It is believed that the deity in this temple has divine power to cure a person possessed with evil spirit. Hundreds of 'Sankatwalas', as the possessed people are referred to in local lingo, throng to the temple every day to offer prayers and have 'darshan'.



This shrine has three deities who are worshipped: Balaji (Lord Hanuman), Pret Raj (The King of spirits), Bhairav. The idol inside which is over more than 1000 years old was never created by an artist, it is believed to have self-appeared. But, the temple around it was built in the 20th century. Legend says that this temple was bestowed with divine powers to cure people possessed with evil spirits and contained by black magic.

Previously, the area of the temple was a dense forest where the ancestors of Shri Mahant Ji started worshipping Balaji. According to the story, the three deities came in a dream of Shri Mahant Ji, and he heard a voice ordering him to be ready for serving his duty. Suddenly, Lord Balaji appeared before him and ordered: "Take duty of serving me". After this incident, they started worshipping Lord Hanuman here.

Now people suffering from malignant spirits and black magic or spell get their relief when they make an appeal for relief to Shri Bhairav ji and Shri Pret Raj Sarkar who holds his court and awards punishment to the malignant spirits, ghosts, goblins, ghouls, evil eyed witches etc.Shrine of Balaji, Court of Pret Raja, Pooja griha, Bhairav ji temple and Ram Darbar are some of the spots worth seeing here.


One can witness people going through various physical therapies like keeping heavy stones on their body , on arms, legs and chest , to ease their pain. There are others who inhale the smoke that fumes out of the sweet Patasa's kept on smoldering cowpats. The ones with serious case of spirit possession, who tends to get violent, are even shackled in chains within the temple premises.



No Prasad in Temple


Mandir or temples are often known for prasads, but Mehendipur Balaji Temple this is a place where no prasad is offered. As you step on the premises of the temple, the petty shopkeepers try to sell prasad. You have to take that black colour ball as it is considered unlucky to refuse them. While it is not meant to be eaten, you have to throw it into the fire. Strange no?
